Dear Reader,
I don’t have much to write this week. My birthday was this past Wednesday, and I spent most of it away from the city with my wife and some friends. However, I will share with you a new poem I wrote for a project I am working on with my friend Julian Bracero. We’re keeping it under wraps for now, but I am excited to share this project with you once it’s ready for the light of day.
In light of my birthday, the greatest gift you can give me is to share my work with others. Whether it’s sharing my Substack with a friend, becoming a paid subscriber, buying my latest book for a family member, or leaving a review on Amazon, your continued support means the world to me.
Writing is meant to be shared, and I am privileged to share my work with readers like you.
Enjoy!
-Ryan
ON THE ROAD
The city opens up like a book flap,
gray buildings peeled back
to reveal open air and blue sky.
We settle under that great canopy
and watch as the city
Shrinks behind us,
a world of invention
reduced to a black blip
on a green map.
Like leaving the sun’s orbit,
you’re free to wander the cosmos,
that empty space beyond
its reach, home to
satellites and voyagers—
we’re comets crossing the open road.
