Dear Reader,
Lately, I've found myself obsessed with military history. Now, I'm not talking about battles, numbers, and policy. I am talking about the stories of men and women on the front lines and their firsthand accounts of the realities of war. It started with a show on HBO called Generation Kill. The show is based on the work of Evan Wright, a journalist for The Rolling Stone, who embedded with the 1st Reconnaissance Battalion of the United States Marine Corps during the 2003 invasion of Iraq. The show follows a group of young soldiers navigating the banality and horror of war. After finishing the show, I started reading AJ Liebling, a war correspondent during the Second World War, and Studs Terkel's, The Good War.
